North Shore, Oahu. 2015I was on Oahu filming for Electric Sunglasses, I had been hired on as their Digital Marketing Manager a year or so prior, with very clear instructions that I was not coming on as a shooter, I was part of the marketing team. However, that never stopped me from offering and over time I’d get the chance to photograph or film a quick need for the brand. Fast forward to this trip and I was officially in charge of video content. Being a photographer at heart, I was always looking for a way to shoot stills while on filming gigs. A trick I had learned filming surf trips was to bring along an old medium format film body, assuring the hired photog that while I might be sneaking a few stills, I wasn’t trying to step on their toes.
This particular afternoon we were cohosting a barbecue at the Volcom House, full of Hawaii’s heavy hitters and traveling pro’s. The surf was massive, pretty much maxing out everywhere on the North Shore. In between filming clips of the party, I noticed a single surfer contemplating paddling out. Thankfully, for his sake he didn’t. Thankfully, for my sake, he stood there for a while and I had my trusty Yashica D around my neck to shoot this frame.
